Mo Mháthair (My Mother)
Mother's Day is coming soon. My mother is long gone and resting peacefully. I'm working on learning this tune in rememberance, Mo Mháthair (My Mother), on the high whistle. There are versions around on other forums and YouTube, however, I'm learning from a CD called 'Traditional Irish Music on Flute and Guitar' by Jack (flute) & Jimmy Coen (guitar)... this is the version I like.
Another version, if you're into the low whistle, you might like this.

And remember your mothers 'cause you only got one.

FWIW (and as you're giving it an Irish angle by your choice of music) Mother's day in Ireland falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This year that was on March 15th.

FWIW, I didn't think of that, however, March 15th will be soon enough to get the tune right. I'm still newbie-ish with learning. And the tune is nice and slow.FWIW (and as you're giving it an Irish angle by your choice of music) Mother's day in Ireland falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This year that was on March 15th.

But that was this year., Lent, and in effect Mother's Day, depend on the date of Easter, a moveable feast.

Since ytliek lives in the States, Mother's Day falls on May 10th for him every year. Plenty of time yet to get the tune.
I didn't know it. Do you know any sung versions of it, ytliek? If not, I'd familiarise myself with those, too.

Yes, there are a few YT versions and here is the one I prefer.Nanohedron wrote:Since ytliek lives in the States, Mother's Day falls on May 10th for him every year. Plenty of time yet to get the tune.

Just to be clear, my mother was Lithuanian born in the USA, but, Lithuanian thru and thru. She LOVED Irish music. Irish genes' from dad.
And, my mother is with me every day... sometimes too close... like voices in the head and such, etc.

And neither should you have had to. I salute your sentiment, the tune and your timing.ytliek wrote:FWIW, I didn't think of that
The modern celebration of Mother's Day began in the US, AFAIK. According to Hallmark, Mother's Day is in May. And that's as official as we get in this country. You have to have a Hallmark card for Mother's Day. Right? And about 44 Million Mothers here expect some form of recognition on that Sunday in May. Ytiek, I'll play that one for my departed Mom on May 10th as well. Cheers!
I don't see a date on Hallmark's calendar for St Pedant's Day.

Hallmark is the Hallmark!
I'm still newbie-ish to it all, that techy stuff and digitalizing the world. So here is my rough draft of the tune. I'm trying to learn by ear and the various software(s), ABCexplorer, etc., and I'll get to recording someday I hope (Audacity). Keep in mind that the people I play with just want to play the music and leave all the fuss about digiting everything to others (me). My notes may be off and the ornaments I haven't figured out. So take it with a grain of salt for now. Any help?

I know it from the great Bobby MacLeod's solo accordion album.
