Here's something you might think about. Big Whistle carries both the Susato Kildare S-series and the new Susato Oriole model. The Oriole is a good bit less expensive than the Kildare S-series. A brand spanking new Oriole might carry a similar price as a second hand Kildare - and without the microbial vagaries of the used whistle. :) The Oriole bore is similar to the Kildare S. Both are tunable. They have a similar sound and playing characteristics. Extra bodies are now available for the D head in Eb, C and Bb as well. The Oriole is worth considering IMO.

Thanks Feadoggie for the info.
I had seen the Susatos on Phil's site but didn't really know which
would get the best volume.
So the Oriole has good volume?

Yes, it does have good volume. It is louder than the V-series Kildare, my personal judgement. The Oriole may not be quite as loud as the Kildare S-series but the Oriole has plenty of volume to be a good session whistle. The head dimensions are similar on both models. The only obvoius design/construction difference is that the outer collar of the head does not extend down along the sides of the voicing window on the Oriole as it does on the Kildare (and Dublin models).

I don't think the Kildare has any advantage over the Oriole in the wind protection department, if that matters. They both behave similarly when playing out of doors. You can turn the head upside down on either of them to guard against the wind.

I've always liked the Kildare, accepting it for what it is, and the Oriole is just as likeable, again just my opinion. But if what you are looking for is the ultimate in a loud whistle, the Kildare is still a great choice - not nearly as expensive as a Copeland and much more readily available.

Feadoggie, thanks very much for the info, very helpful.

As it happens I'm now sorted with a Dublin. I'll see how it goes.

I was playing for a whole load of Morris dancers this last weekend and what
with 3 melodeons, a fiddle, a drum in our band and hundreds of bells I was struggling hearing myself.
There was a couple of other whistle players there and they both had Susatos just
for that reason.

Yep, a Susato would be a good choice for that purpose. Glad you've got things sussed out.
