I am a fan of the great Swedish multi instrumentalist Ale Moller. He often lists amongst his instruments CLARINO
It sounds like a reed instrument..in fact much like a clarinet but I can find no information about it. When I google Clarino it shows a brass instrument. I'm wondering if it's some folk reed instrument. Gorgeous sound..heard to great effect on the Three Climbers on Robin Williamson's ECM album The Iron Stone.
Anybody know what this instrument is? I'd love to get one. Thanks
Clarino

Re: Clarino
Judging from a sample of the track "Clarino" on Ale Möller's Pegasus album, the clarino sounds like a xaphoon type instrument.

Re: Clarino
Thanks..it does sound a little similar . I'm wondering if it's something he had made. I really love the haunting sound.

Re: Clarino
Clarino ... clarineau ... clarinet/chalumeau (probably). Effectively a limited capability clarinet ( in as much as they usually use a clarinet mouthpiece these days) but few if any keys. Hanson in the UK make a basic instrument in plastic http://www.hansonclarinets.com/Hanson_C ... umeau.html , there are several European manufacturers producing similar instruments in wood, sometimes in different keys, sometimes with up to three keys to extend the range beyond the basic "octave and a note".
I've got a Hohner that I enjoy playing and Jack Campin has put together a collection of over 400 tunes specifically for these instruments http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Chalumeau.abc
Hope this all helps

Re: Clarino
Makers' names ... from the link given on Jack Campin's website :
the "chalumeau" by SANS in Catalonia; "saxonett" by Jupiter as
sold by Bernard Loffet in France; "clarineau" by Kunath, "chalumeau" by
Tupian and "pocket clarinet" by Hohner, all in Germany;
The facebook picture appears to show a pipe with a clarinet mouthpiece, which agrees with my assumption ... it may even be home-made (or custom-made), nevertheless, apparently perfectly adequate
