Just to clear the record, I myself never said any of that. For Irish music (all else aside), in simple-system flutes keys are a negotiable option, and flutes of synthetic material are perfectly acceptable; Tom Doorley himself performed handsomely on a Delrin flute for years, but the point is that it was made by an expert. Frippery counts for nothing but itself. What counts is tone and performance. What counts is that a good maker has made it; that is, an expert who knows how to cut good embouchures and bring the instrument into good intonation and performance, and this unavoidably takes time, care, and attention. That's a big part of what you're paying for in a proper instrument, and only a vulgarian would begrudge paying for such necessary expertise. If truly good flutes were a snap to make, I daresay most of us would be making our own. I know I would.

The only option I would not back down from is to have a tuning slide.

I need to say that I meant keys are not the most required or important feature that I thought. I think I can live without.

Well, they do keep your flute from rolling off the table. :)

You could bring a IKEA dowel to the session and stick it in the F#-hole, that ought to do it

A fellow I know used to have a little rubber gorilla - it looked like it was meant to hang on a drinking glass - that he would clip onto his keyless flute when he wasn't playing it. Since it was soft and held secure, that did the job, too. Flute monkeys are da bomb.

Could you shed some light on what you believe prevents Irish flute from being capable of playing Jazz, and what is it's disadvantage in playing ITM? Not in disagreement, I'm just wondering because whatever limitation there might be hasn't yet occurred to me.
Absolutely nothing would prevent a player using the simple system flute from playing jazz. As for Irish music nothing could be better than a simple system flute although a boehm system can certainly be used. I haven't heard anyone play jazz on a simple system flute yet.
I'd love to hear it. But the question remains. Why haven't orchestral or jazz players used anything but the boehm system in the last hundred or so years?

Because that system allows greater ease of playing in keys that are more difficult to do on simple system. If ever you've tried Bb minor on simple system, it's doable, but it's a bear.

Pardon me for being dully literal in case yours was a rhetorical question. :)

Duly literal would have been better, though. More interesting, at least. :poke:

Just a joke - duly, as opposed to dully, which is clearly less interesting. Man, if you have to explain it... Anyway, we can move along now....

In some parts of the world they don't rely of special medication for growing the pinky to cover those far-away holes for the low notes. They simply put the hole on the bottom side of the flute and cover the hole with their leg, which is easier in the sitting position.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.
