Rode NT5 - any feedback?

Post by Tonehole »

Hi,

I'm still without a mic and have been considering these ones for flute playing.

If anyone owns or has tried these, I'd love to hear any feedback about their recording and detail.

I don't record through a computer so a USB mic is out.

Thanks

I've used a pair of NT5's. They work well. If you can find them at a good price go for it. They sound rather similar to the older MXL 603s that I use regularly. They are bright sounding (but that's all relative) and work well on acoustic guitars to pick up the top end sparkle. The Audio Technica AT4041 (haven't tried the AT2041 yet) is another similar mic, IME. Studio Projects C4's would be another similar choice. Any of them will work.

I like the NT3 a little more for flute. But YMMV. I think the capsule is a little larger than the NT5's. They are a bit more open sounding. It's rather like the AKG C1000s.

I'd still want a large diaphragm condenser to record flute. But that's just me.

I've proven who I am so many times, the magnetic strips worn thin.
