Wet-suits will keep you sorta warm but be careful don't chose clothing or equipment that is "yum-yum yellow" unless you like sharks...they surf too.

Cold water has an advantage in that it keeps the crowds down.
(Crowds are no fun, and crowded big surf is double dangerous.)
