I just found out about an Irish session is in Greensboro, NC.
The Red Oak Brew Pub opens its doors on the LAST Sunday of the month at 4:00pm until 7pm for Trad Irish music.
Red Oak address is:
714 Francis King St.
Greensboro, NC
(336) 299-3649
...if you know Greensboro, it's at the corner of W. Friendly and Guilford College Rd. to give you an idea...
I'll give you my report Monday morning and let you know how it turned out!
Slainte!

I was pleasantly surprised on such a large turn out for the session at the Red Oak! 16 musicians playing lively traditional Irish Music. There were several fiddle players, Irish flutes, Tin whistles, concertas, guitars and Uilleann Pipes! I got there around 6:30 and we played until 8:00...what a great time. I got a small list of tunes and hopefully I'll have some ready for next month.
If you live close enough to go next month then by all means go!
By the way...the beer was pretty good too!

While I'm at it, two other Triad sessions:
1) Foothills Brewery, 4th St., downtown Winston-Salem.
First sunday of the month
4-6pm
Two pints free. (Although the beer isn;t as good as Red Oak.)
2) Claddagh Restaurant, High Point, NC
3rd sunday of the month
4:30 - ???
I believe domestic "beer" is free. But it's definitely worse than either Foothills or Red Oak.

Oooo, that's worth the drive!Wormdiet wrote:More importantly, the beer is free
So, what's the etiquette for this sort of thing? The Tir Na Nog
session in Raleigh has free beer, but I'm never sure how to get
ahold of some without feeling like I'm trying to fool the bartender

Red Oak is great- they assign a waitperson for the group the entire evening. They pop by between sets and ask for orders. A month ago I dropped a full pint and it shattered (nearly missing a set of UPs) and they still let me in the door!
Foothills - you go up to the bartender, tell him yer a musician, and he'll provide the pint.

Hmmmm, I might have to check these out. I'm an aspiring novice UPiper in Burlington. It will be a year (or two) before I can play well enough to join a session, but I would like to see some pipes...etc. in action. At least I could pick up a tune list.
And yes, the Red Oak brewery is excellent! The only brewery I can think of that might be better is Front Street Brewery in Wilmington (alas, that is a bit of a drive and I doubt it has an ITM session).
Peace!

Re: Greensboro, NC
Are there any sessions still on? I'm going to be in Greensboro for work from Sunday - Wednesday (leaving Thursday) and I could bring a flute along.

Unfortunately it looks like I will be unable to make it to that one. My flight lands at 4.
Ah well, another time!
