Harmony Assistant

Post by Jim Troy »

A question for anyone using Harmony Assistant.
I'm printing out tunes, from Harmony, for a pupil (flute/whistle) who only reads the Tonic Solfa notation.
I need to change the fundamental, which is C, in the Harmony program, to D, so that it will read Doh , for D. and not Doh , for C, as it stands at the moment.
Thanks for any help.

Don't know anything about Harmony Assistant but there is a discussion list for users of this program at
www.myriad-online.com/cgi-bin/bbs/YaBB.pl Perhaps you'd get more (and useful) responses there.

Best wishes.

I'm not a HA user either, though I played with it a long time ago. But I can think of two possible workarounds.

1. Transpose tunes in other keys to C before printing them. That is, in effect, the equivalent of translating fixed-Do solfège to moveable-Do. Your student can then read Do as the tonic of whatever key he/she is playing in.

2. The "Scat Jazz" feature of HA lets you assign arbitrary syllables to the pitches. Use a [scat:] directive to explicitly assign Tonic Solfa letters/syllables to each note of the chromatic scale, with the tonic of the key as d/Do. Not sure if the program allows you to print out the assigned scat syllables, though.

Good luck!
