This workshop will be taught by Jonathan Milton, Fiddler’s Green’s own Irish Flute and Penny Whistle instructor and flute player for the Irish band, Aidan.

Class will begin with a demonstration of the variety of styles of Irish flute and whistle playing, and Jonathan will talk about the respective approaches and techniques used to achieve stylistic differences. A history of the development of traditional flute playing will be presented, and special attention will be paid to the influence of uilleann piping. Techniques and ornamentation derived from piping will be demonstrated in the context of tunes. This workshop will also focus on developing problem solving skills relating to the transfer of fiddle and accordion tunes to the flute and whistle. The importance of diaphragm support, breath placement, and embouchure will also be discussed. This workshop is for novice to upper intermediate players; attendees should already be familiar with their instruments and able to play at least a few tunes. Pen/paper and recording devices are recommended.

Cost: $30

Time: 2pm – 4pm

Space is limited, so call Fiddler’s Green at 512-452-3900 to reserve your spot today!
