Pipe Up w/ The Shee. New Westminster BC 6/25/09

Post by AaronMalcomb »

If you are in the Lower Mainland or plan on being in the area take the opportunity the catch this great confluence of talent.

The New Westminster Police Pipe Band is hosting Pipe Up to be held at the Massey Theatre, New Westminster, on Thursday June 25th starting at 7:30 P.M. The evening will be a fundraiser to assist both pipe bands to compete in this year's World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Partial proceeds will go to the New Westminster Police's "Cops for Cancer" campaign.

The concert is the North American debut of The Shee, an up-and-coming, all-female group of very talented musicians including fiddler Shona Mooney, BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2006. To have a listen here's a YouTube clip of The Shee performing in Ullapool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Tv8JORK ... annel_page

Also appearing will be the reigning Grade 1 World Champions, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. Apart from their competitive success in the top grade, the SFU Pipe Band has also played at Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. This will be the only opportunity to see the band in the Lower Mainland before they return to Scotland to defend their title at the World Pipe Band Championships where they will also be performing at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall the Wednesday prior to the championship. You can see clips of their winning performances at SFUTube.

And opening the show will be the New Westminster Police Pipe Band in its second year under the sponsorship of the police. Formerly known as the Maple Ridge Pipe Band, the NWPPB has partnered with the SFU organization to attract and develop pipers and drummers in the area as well as alumni from the Robert Malcolm Memorial juvenile band.
