Belgium, Brussels

Post by Roger O'Keeffe »

Workshop (tune-swapping and playing for enjoyment for all instruments, tin-whistle tuition for beginners) every Tuesday (See post below!), except for the second Tuesday of every month when we have a session in the James Joyce pub, which is also in the Rue Archimède.

Participants in the workshop are expected to become members of the Irish Club, which is open to all nationalities. The session in the JJ is open to all comers, even bodhrán players provided they exercise some self-control.

There are also sessions in Antwerp and the vicinity of Liège, I can provide either contact names or additional details if needed.

Every year in May (normally the third weekend) we have a weekend residential uilleann pipers' tionól in Borzée, near La Roche en Ardenne, which has been attended by pipers from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Luxembourg, and occasionally from further afield (Morten!).

We also have occasional one-day gatherings of pipers in Brussels on a Saturday at other times of the year.

PM me for any additional information, including confirmation about what is happening over holiday periods.

Sadly, the Irish Club of Belgium has had to give up its clubhouse because there weren't enough members paying subscriptions to enable it to keep the facility.

We're still looking for an alternative location for the weekly workshops, but in the meantime the session on the second Tuesday of each month continues in the James Joyce.

Feel free to PM me for updates.

Update:

The workshop/session on each Tuesday other than the second Tuesday of the month has now resumed normal service in the Old Oak pub, which is in the Rue Franklin (I think it's no. 67 or thereabouts), near the Rond-point Schuman. It's in a small room above the bar, which you reach via a door to the left of the bar.

Also, a new weekly session is being launched to take place every Sunday from 14.00 to 17.00 approx. in The Bank, Rue du Bailli, off Avenue Louise.

The weekly sunday session is now well under way, details below. It's organised by a good friend whom some of you may know as Mooman of Mudcat fame (he also organised a Mudcat Eurogathering in Brussels a few years ago). It's broad-church, by no means striving for purist ITM. Sensitivity to session etiquette expected nonetheless.

The Bank

79 Rue du Bailli (off Avenue Louise near Place Chatelain)

1050 Brussels

from 14h00 (or just before)to 16h00 (or just after) (depending on sporting events of the day!)

The weekly Sunday session has died due to a change of owner of the pub in question.

The weekly workshop has likewise died because we haven't got a suitable place to replace the now largely virtual Irish club.

On the positive side :boggle: after losing the Kulturkampf against football (soccer) in the James Joyce, we have discovered a probably more congenial location, the Porte Noire in the Rue des Alexiens. We'll have the next few monthly sessions there before confirming the new location, but it looks promising: for a start, it just doesn't have any TVs at all!

If in doubt, PM me.
