Glad to hear you enjoyed it! We usually have a really good time. I was really sorry to miss last week...we were out of town.

Could somebody give a summary of current sessions at or near Santa Cruz/Los Gatos, etc.? Like the times and days and style of sessions in the area? It sounds like some mentioned in this thread are one-offs, some are ongoing, and who knows what. (Yes, I'm in the area for a few weeks).

Tell us something.: I'm interested in Irish traditional music. Specifically flute & uilleann pipes at the moment. Did you know that the Sally Garden's starts like G2 DG B2 GB using the ABC language, that's certainly fascinating isn't it?

Hello, check out the website for the Santa Cruz/Monterey
Clifford-Hoban Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann
http://www.folkplanet.com/cce/ceili.html

It has all the public sessions I know of listed.

Hey George! We need to get together again for some tunes sometime. Perhaps another local "one-off" session could be organized for somewhere local sometime soon. Later.

New Session

Post by Grack »

Hi... I'm trying to organize a new session. I have a spot and a couple possible time slots, but I need to know what day works best for most people.

I've got either (or BOTH) the 1st and 4th Sundays of the month - appox. 4-6pm ... but the time is rough... It'll be at a pub in the SC Mountains.

Anyone on here have an opinion about what day they would be more likely to show up up? I want to pick a day that'll work for most people - as I don't want to be the only one sitting there. ;-)

Let me know! (it'll be a full speed session). This would be a regular session, just need to get a set day(s) and let the owner of the pub know. There's a good chance of expanding into Tuesday nights once or twice a month too if there's demand.

Any of those dates work for me, even the Tuesdays. Hope this happens and thanks for putting this together.

Initial feedback from several various posts has me thinking it'll probably start out on the 1st Sunday of the month....adding the 4th Sunday if demand is there, and then finally considering a Tuesday as well...

Email me if you want to be on the session mailing list. Though I'll try and remember to post updates here and various other places. ;-)

I'll definitely check it out, and will show up for a pint and a listen, even if I'm not up to speed on the playing.

BTW, the second Sunday sessions at Britannia Arms in Aptos are pretty much intermediates anymore, rather than slow play. We will play slowly if someone requests it (and we still have the rule that whoever calls the tune sets the pace), but lately we've been playing at closer to full speed.

Thanks for the update on the Aptos sessions...I should probably check it out again. I attended once, oh, maybe last summer sometime...but always forget about it.

New Session @ The White Cockade

Post by Grack »

Okay, here's the details...

The White Cockade
18025 Hwy 9
Boulder Creek, CA 95006
(831)338-1414
www.thewhitecockade.com

Time: First Sunday of each month, 4-6pm

Inaugural Session - Sunday, February 5th.

Open session, all welcome. Only rule - if you don't know the tune too well, and/or can't keep up, sit the tune out (myself included ;-) - out of respect for the other musicians and patrons. Other than that, come, play, eat, drink, have fun.

The White Cockade, for anyone who hasn't been there, is a really nice little pub in the Santa Cruz mountains - just outside Boulder Creek. It's got a warm atmoshpere, good food, good selection of beers and a wood burning stove.

Should end up being a good session with some good players ... I'm doing my best to get the word out. ;-) Feel free to pass on the info.

Quick question...do you know if The White Cockade is an over-21?

Not sure...I'll call and ask tomorrow. They're closed Mondays. I don't think they are 21-and-over only, since they have a full menu, and non-"bar" seating.

(edit: what was I thinking? it was Tuesday! ;-) )
