I'd be far less grumpy if I could successfully Google a translation for these bewilderments.

"works do" = annual workplace party

I haven't sussed out "TIWW", though. I don't think that's a Brit thing, just a Ben thing in textese.

Jem has "works do" correct. It's such a common expression over here, I didn't even realise it wasn't universal.

As for "TIWW" for what is perhaps the best known jig, I got it from Americans. :D

BTW, I'll probably stop being annoying before too long. :)

Why?

Or perhaps that should be, "How?"

Fat chance.

Even the hardest-scrubbing brawniest Irish washerwoman wouldn't have a hope......

Ohhhhhh. Got it. It's a tune I don't even think about. Evil. Most evil. You have much to answer for, you know.

Fat chance of that. You seem to be in rude good health, so I'm not about to send flowers and condolences to yer Missus just yet.

Nano

As for TIWW, I'm with Nano - you inflicted that on them and expected and understanding, enthusiasm or even sympathy, let alone rapt attention? Something equally hackneyed but prettier, like one of the well-known O'Carolan tunes, would have been much better tactics.

No. Trust me - one has to know one's audience. TIWW was my best shot. It got the best reaction. O'Carolan? Wouldn't have had a hope.

Not to mention perpetuating what should be left to die the death, unmarked and unmourned. Before this they had been blissfully untouched by this travesty, and look what he did - and in all calculation, too. Criminal of him. Release the flying monkeys, I say.

But I like TIWW.

One of my pals, a very fine piper indeed - a Dub - often plays it in sessions. No-one bats an eye in Ireland. It's only elsewhere such things are scorned no matter how they're played. In my experience anyway.

Oh, all right then.

Here in the States, I admit the tune carries a dark cloud over it. Probably has to do with it having a history of being the media go-to track to drive home a comedic idea of things Irish. It's been iconic for that in cartoons and such. One becomes a bit embarrassed, to say the least. And if you play it you're either thought of as an ignorant newb, or if you have the street cred you're assumed to be probably taking the piss, such is the opprobrium the tune has gathered.

I agree that in and of itself the tune is a fine one. Just has baggage, is all. There are quarters that feel it's time for all of this negativity to be over and done with.
