From description
The famous German alto in a chilling version of this very old Irish air. Part of the eeriness of the song—other than the tragic lyrics—is the mixolydian mode in which it is composed. Scholl's straight-line vocal control contributes further to the almost dirge-like quality of the song.

I don't know ...
A fine singer, obviously. But I find this castrato version of what is a first-person (failed) wedding tale somewhat disconcerting. Unless that's the message.

Hard to say if it's "very old". This familiar setting dates from 1909 - though the tale type (e.g. Aarne-Thompson) is undoubtedly much older.Jleo Fipple wrote:very old Irish air.

Re: Andreas Scholl, sings "She moves through the fair"
During the early naughties (I don't really recall the year) a bunch of us, a good mix of singers and instrumentalists, did a live CD in aid of the Clare Cancer centre. On the night Áine Ui Cheallaigh sang what for me is the definitive version of 'She moved through the fair'. Quite different from the usual versions but just lovely.
As a contrast to the above I've uploaded an MP3. I'll leave it there for a few days:

Even contextually different. Get it while it's hot folks.Mr.Gumby wrote:During the early naughties (I don't really recall the year) a bunch of us, a good mix of singers and instrumentalists, did a live CD in aid of the Clare Cancer centre.
