 I like much!

I was playing it this morning and yes, the "Ceolachan" setting is indeed the beast. My tea levels weren't sufficient to motivate me to match up the keys, but I had the distinct feeling that if I did, I could put "Cathal McConnell's" right on top of the first two parts of this setting, and they would work together.

And ditto on the third part sounding like "Humours of Whiskey" -- that was what made me think my friend was so clever in putting the two together (she's also younger, less brain-dead, and a better musician so can keep them separate). But "horizontal tune transfer" it is!

I am taking the wire brush to some corners of the repertoire. Today a slip jig I know as 'Drops of Spring Water' popped up, one that has been dormant in a dusty corner.

I tried to confirm the name but came up with nothing during a quick search, drawing blanks on both name and ABC.

It's this one anyway. wellknown enough I would have thought:

ded dAG FED|dec dFA G2 E|ABc dAG FGA| =cBc E2 F GFE....

A tune worth a mention here, perhaps.

For some reason, I usually play this B part with a second ending on the repeat:

d2g fdf ece|d2g fdf g2e|agf gfe dAB|=cBc E2F G2E:|

Memory suggests I learned it off Paddy Glackin and Jolyon Jackson's recording but I haven't checked. Hadn't played the tune for over a decade, it just popped out.
Rakes of Westmouth
That rings bells, O'Neill has it as Rakes of Westmeath I see. I also tracked the 'Drops of Spring Water' title, that's used for the tune in Donncha O Brian's 'Golden Eagle' collection.

To add to the crosspposting Guru: I have that bit at the end coming out as afd gec dAB =cBc G2F GFE

And rambling on, 'My Mind will never be Easy' came up from the same memory flow so I have that re-instated as well. But that in turn triggered an association with Séamus Ennis' version of the latter, which he called 'The Whistling Thief'. He didn't play it`as a slip jig though but more the way he sang the song and so turned it into a lovely 12/8 version, which is my project for today.

I'll have to listen to Ennis' version of the Whistling Thief again. My mother in law sings that song pretty close to the slip jig way, so that's what's in my head.
