Late one summer night at a session in Putney, Vermont, a fiddler shouted out in the middle of a set of jigs: "Dog at the Door!" We all stopped playing and looked at her, puzzled, because none of us knew a tune by that name. She said, "sorry, I was just letting you know that there's a dog at your door." We looked and the neighbor's golden retriever was sitting with his face pressed up against the screen door, watching us.
