I'm sure he did, but it would have been in the under-12 age group, not the senior championship which is the subject of these lists.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that he won senior comps in '79. You are correct Egan is about 37 or 38.

Just for the record
I won it in 91 in Sligo. My name is on the cup next to Felix Dorans!

How come no results from 2007, 2008 and so on? That's what I'm really interested in.

I wonder if the banjo winner wasn't the young John Carty (rather than Carthy).

I know he won the all-Ireland in the early 80s anyway, if it wasn't 1981 it must have been 1982 or 1983 because he came out to Australia around that time where he was billed (on one poster) as "All-Ireland Bango Champion." [sic] I drove him around for a couple of days. I asked him about the competition.

Me: What was the tune that won you the all-Ireland?
JC: Last night's fun.
Me: Last night's fun? Really?
JC: Well I gave it a bit of a polish, like.

I just found those old Treoirs magazines:

1979

Fiddle - they list each of the three winners as "Ard-Cheoltoir"
They were Frank Kelly- Donegal

Under 18 was a tough competition that year
1st: Martin Hayes
2nd: Kevin Glackin

Eileen Ivers won under 14.

2-Row Button Accordeon - Jon Lucid - Ballyheigue (Co Kerry I think)

Concert Flute – Again "Ard-Cheoltoir" Leon Agnew - Belfast (S. Egan 1st U. 11 Sean Smyth 2nd U.14)
and Marcus Hernon (Galway)
Tin Whistle – Peter McAlinden - London (Seamus Egan was 2nd to Breda Smyth Under 11.)
Piano - Mary McNamara - Clare
Uilleann Pipes – Brian Stafford - Derry
Harp – Patricia Daly - Armagh
Mouth Organ –Kieran McHugh Ballycastle (Co. Antrim I think)
Piano – Seamus O'Sullivan - Glasgow
Bodhran - Vincent Short -Hartwood Lancs.
Drums – Billy Dwyer - I'm pretty sure Billy won about 4-5 times in a row
Rogha Ghleas – Seamus Logan - Ballymena (Co Antrim)
War Pipes – James Finnegan - London
Strummed Stringed Instruments - Willie Kavanagh - Longford.
Fiddle – Slow Airs – John O'Sullivan - Kilkenny
Uilleann Pipes – Slow Airs – Gearoid O Allumharain - Cahercullan Inis (Ennis Co. Clare?)
Concert Flute – Slow Airs – Padraig (Peadar?) O Lochlainn
Tin Whistle – Slow Airs – Chalmers Brown
Duets – M. (Martin?) Hayes and M (Mary?) McNamara - Co. Clare
Trios – M. Harty, E.O'Brien & W. Fogarty - Ormond CCE
Ceili Bands – St. Flannans CB- Ennis Co. Clare
Grupai Ceoil - Armagh Pipers Club
Singing – Irish – Ladies – Eibhlin Briscoe - Nenagh (Co Tipp.)
Singing – Irish – Men – Mathiun O'Caoimh Clonmel (Co. Tipp)
Singing – English – Ladies – Rita Gallager (Co Donegal)
Singing – English – Men – John Cronin - Co. Cork

Hello

I was at the Fleadh in Letterkenny in 1979 and I wandered into the under-18 fiddle competition. Martin Hayes bet Kevin Glackin all right. The adjudicator was Michael O'hAlluin, a flute player and piper from Dublin.

Both Martin and Kevin had totally different styles and I don't know how a winner was picked.

Tell you the truth I thought that it was an under-14 competition.

Regards

Hey John, I was there that day too. Small World eh!

I must admit I wouldn't like to have been the judge that day.

As you say, their styles were so, so different - to me they were all brilliant ...... & all winners!

Hello

Yes, it was Buncrana. The memory must be going. I camped that year. At one stage had about 14 in the tent. Mick Coyne and his brother Eamonn, Eamonn Brophy, Martin Hanly and Shea Fogarty and more that I cannot remeber.
Jim McKillop was playing on stage in the sun during the day an Saturday. He played some brilliant music. I spent a couple of hours listening to him.
Mick Coyne organised a pipers session. Tried to get all the pipers at the fleadh to go. There was only seven or eight at the whole fleadh. I bought a practice set that September from Matt Kiernan.
It was hell trying to get back. There was an explosion in Mullaghmore in Sligo that weekend and the security coming back down through Derry was fierce.
Good memories of that weekend

Cheers

Absolutely right alurker, it was of course Buncrana. [ now why didn't I spot that error the first time :-? ]

Seanie, I too was in a tent that year, in a field high above the town & I remember that not only was McKillop playing all afternoon, but he played most of the evening on that stage as well - I don't think anyone could get him off!

I have some good memories too, but I remember some of the pubs having to shut because of some violent eejits from Derry coming through & smashing pub windows etc

I also seem to remember there was a big Folk Festival on around the same time, in Letterkenny itself.

Ahhhhhhh the good old days!
