Suggestions for a jerry rigged instrument project?

Post by cazadorecovey »

Hi list, I'm off on college holiday right now, about to be bored out of my mind. I've been tossing about the idea of building a cookie tin instrument of some sort, for my living history "minstrel" group my friends and I are trying to put together. Banjo would be nice I think, although on that note, I haven't picked up my guitar in about a year and a half. Maybe a small mandouke thing or a two or three string, for lack of a better term, "soprano upright".

My mileage always varies.

Mandouke or ukulele would be nice. Actually a friend of mine just made a ukulele from scratch...the only difficult thing he said was measuring and drilling and assembling the tuning pegs. The gear played like any other ukulele. Good luck to you!

Bored out of your mind is it?

These folks could use your help, and it would be a far better way to spend your 'bored hours' than building some silly instrument.

Google "cigar box guitar" and "cookie tin banjo." You'll find a number of sites with plans and pictorial how-to articles. I built a three-string cookie tin banjo in a couple days. It's a hoot to play. I used guitar tuning pegs and strings but there are plans for using things like eyebolts and weedeater line. Build one. They aren't hard to make, sound surprisingly good and you have the enormous satisfaction of building something useful.

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Oops! Well, I hope Covey got his banjo built. How do you shoot a zombie thread thru the head?

Best wishes.
