Good cd reccomendations
I am having a brain f*rt right now. I can't think of great bands right now. Can someone recommend some good cds from Dervish, Solas, and Danu. I am having difficulties right now of thinking of other bands and artists. Maybe some of M.Molloy's best cd.
I currently have:
CTL
Lunasa
M.McGoldrick's Fused and Wired
all of Crawford's
WFO
Grada
and a lot of mixed cds of different artists.
I just can't really think of all the ones I have now, or ones I need to get. Sorry and thanks for the help.
Also, I would love to buy some cds off of people that would be willing to reduce their collection. If that is legal of course. I really don't know the law on buying used cds.

Re: Good cd reccomendations
Well, Chieftains' Water from Well is super awesome even if you're not normally their fan.
Running through my collection:
Brian McAodha - Throw away the keys
Gay, Connor, Sean Mckeon - Dusty miller (if you like pipes)
Joe+Antionette McKenna - anything
O'Flynn, Keane, Molloy - the fire aflame
Those are band-ish. If you like solo pipers as well, I can supply you with ten times as long list

Re: Good cd reccomendations
I'd recommend the following:
Kitty Lie Over - Mick O'Brien and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh
North by Northwest - Eliot Grasso and Dave Cory
Eavesdropper - Kevin Burke and Jackie Daly
Contentment is Wealth - Matt Molloy and Sean Keane
Doublin' - Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan
The South West Wind and/or Touch Me If You Dare - Ronan Browne and Peter O'Loughlin
Molloy Brady Peoples - Matt Molloy, Paul Brady & Tommy Peoples
I recommend these as they are all commercially available. Good players and good tunes. You wouldn't do bad to search for more solo or group CD's from the above players either. You can also go for Chieftains (the first four albums are available in a set and probably the best place to start), Bothy Band, Patrick Street, etc. All are commercially available at this time.
If you like solo piping I'd recommend anything in Seamus Ennis' or Willie Clancy's catalogue. Matt Molloy (as you mentioned) is a good source too. His "Live from Matt Molloy's Pub" is an interesting album. Some of his albums get a little flowery for my taste but good tunes and playing nonetheless (IMHO). The one he released a few years back with John Carty was nice too.
Another good place for tunes (and free too!) is to download the live kitchen sessions from Clare FM.

- Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

I like some of Altan's stuff.
The Kells do some nice stuff but it's not all I Trad. Brian McCoy is a fine whistler/fluter/piper and they have good bodhran playing.

Masters of Tradition (RTÉ)
31 tunes, available on iTunes at an irresistible price. (I promise, I'm not Steve Jobs trying to get away with a commercial post)

Re: Good cd reccomendations
I went with FluteDude's advice and downloaded the Masters of Tradition tunes, and it is really worth the money: 31 tunes for $9.99. A VERY nice collection. Thanks for the recommendation, FluteDude!
Re: Good cd reccomendations
Glad my post was of help to anyone.
And yes, it's a nice collection of tunes and has got a wide range.

Re: Good cd reccomendations
I don't think I'd be playing Irish music today had I not acquired "Music from Sliabh Luachra Vol. 6" which is the Jackie Daly album mentioned above by fiddlerwill. There's another brilliant album by Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh which, I think, is called just that. I also second the recommendation for "Eavesdropper." Anything by Planxty, Altan (if you get just one Altan album go for Island Angel) the Bothies and Patrick Street (as long as it's from their first four albums: Patrick Street, No 2, Irish Times, All In Good Time). I couldn't live without The Andy Irvine/Paul Brady album from the 70s, likewise the superb one-off Noel Hill/Tony Linnane album.
"Last night, among his fellow roughs,
He jested, quaff'd and swore."
They cut me down and I leapt up high

I'll live in you if you'll live in me -
I am the lord of the dance, said he!

Re: Good cd reccomendations
Howdy. I'm new here and have recently discovered the song Tripswitch by At First Light, suggested on the Youtube video thread under the tin whistles and such forum. Now I can't stop listening to it. Even if I wanted to, which I don't. Can anyone suggest other songs or c.d.'s like that? Heartbreakingly mellow Irish music with violins, whistles and/or flutes. May or may not contain pipes. Not too crazy about them- yet- but they weren't enough to ruin Tripswitch, either. Instrumental only, please. (Don't want much, do I? )
I would thoroughly appreciate the ideas of those who have been listening to Irish Folk music much longer than I~
Thanks
