I just picked up a mandolin (new?) at a music store here in Eugene... the maker is Crafter. It has an ovation style Lyrachord round back and a piezo pickup with 2 band EQ. The neck is heavy and looks to be made of especially nice wood.
I haven't had a chance to play it "plugged" yet, but the acoustic sound is pretty good. Clean, resonant, well-intonated and very playable action. The shop had two of them, one with a red busrt top, and the other blue... the red one sounded better for some reason.
For $200, plus a new set of strings thrown in for free, I am very pleased with it. Would recommend it highly to anyone interested in learning mandolin on a quality instrument suited for (perhaps limited) performance, without spending a mint.
