Traditional Music of Ireland V.1, Sean Ryan and P.J. Moloney

I have a copy of the early issue of this recording. I understand that the liner notes (or whatever they are called these days) of the recent release on CD has corrected some of the tune names on the initial release. Does anyone have the updates for the tune listing that you’d be willing to share. Would be much appreciated.

Thanks and best wishes.

At the point of responding to my own postings. Got a copy of the liner notes from a kind person. And find that the correct spelling seems to be Maloney not Moloney.

Thanks and best wishes.

Isn't he the uncle or grand-uncle of Sean Moloney? I thought he was either Eddie Moloney or his dad Stephen Moloney's brother, but can't find that information currently.

I'm less certain after trying to find more info!

I confess to being confused. He's listed as Maloney on the recently remastered CD liner notes and apparently won the All Ireland in 1958 under the name of Maloney. In tune names, it's listed as either Maloney or Moloney, but we all know how trustworthy tune names can be.

A little more searching indicates he was a cousin of Mike Rafferty—which doesn't solve the riddle, but is interesting, sorta.

Best wishes.

My first instinct was also 'Moloney' but the CD clearly has him as 'Maloney' so I am confused as well.

I used to meet a PJ Moloney who played the fiddle and came to the Willie week. Some years ago I sort of had the brainwave he could be the man who played with Ryan but now I am thrown into doubt again. Bloody East Galway people with simialr names :swear:

Eddie Moloney's brothers: Ambrose, James, Kevin. Sean is Eddie's son. Kevin, is Sean Moloney's uncle who plays fiddle on Sean's CD "Bridging the Gap"

Thanks Kevin - and Stephen Moloney is Sean's grandfather. PJ could be Stephen's brother, I suppose, but maybe they are not related after all!

According to the blurb on the Claddagh Records site both musicians came from Newport in Co. Tipperary.

Newport is near enough to Garry Kennedy (home of the Bridge Ceili band) and that whole area was a wonderful area for music.

Paddy O'Brian from Nenagh, Gerry O'Connor and his brother Michael.

I used to call into the Bridge Inn in Garry on the way back from Clare. A very good Sunday night session.

Cheers

John

Hi everyone, just came across this.

Paddy Joe Moloney, champion flute player from the Moloney family of Tipperary, was Mike Rafferty's cousin on his mother's side (his mother was a Moloney). They used to play together when young.

I was told these Moloneys were not related to Stephen Moloney's family of Ballinakill fame.

I also asked was Uncle Pakie Moloney (composer of The Earl's Chair) Paddy Joe's father? and the answer was no, he was a different uncle.

Hope that's useful information! - Lesl

One of the Ballinakill Moloneys. Fiddleplayer, recorded with the Ballinakill band, son of Stephen (fluteplayer and founder member of the Ballinakill). Made a recording with his nephew Seán in 1996, Bridging the Gap. (which,as I see now, Kevin Krell already pointed out above. I'll get my coat..).
