The Boiling Hen...
The Boiling Hen...
Hi All.
Anyone have, or know a source for, the sheet music to this great reel?
Couldn't find it on The Session.

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Never heard of it. I just Googled it and found that it's on a McDades album. Did they write it?piperjoe wrote:Hi All.

That's possible. They play it on one of their CDs and on You Tube. It's a ripper!

Re: The Boiling Hen...
It does look as if it's one they wrote. That would explain why it's not notated anywhere. I have no time over the next few days, or I would notate it for you. Remind me towards the end of next week if you want me to have a look at this. (Assuming no-one else has stepped forward in the meantime.)piperjoe wrote:That's possible. - Tell us something.: I'm here because I just wanted to change my location... but it turns out much more complicated than I thought. Do I already have the 100 required characters?

Here you go:
I find the first part very similar to the first part of "The Dunmore Lasses", and the second part to the second part of "Paddy Ryan's Dream".
If you want to play it on the pipes, you will have to transpose it down to E minor.

In Ireland, a boiling fowl is just about the cheapest meat you can buy at the butcher. They're knackered old laying hens I suppose; so tough that boiling for soup or stock is about all they're good for - though in my (cheap) youth, I would roast them in the oven.oleorezinator wrote:She was that angry?

as a very young child, I'd help my grandmother
feed the hens and collect the eggs never making
the connection that the chicken soup was from
old henny-penny. I have a feeling that I've eaten
a rooster or two along the way as well. So yep in
my part of the world they're known as stewing hens.
