Yesterday Tommy Peoples gently signed his new book for me. A massive (380 p) tome, tutor, text and tunes, filled with memories and photographs and some 130 of his own compositions. All of it breathing the spirit and humanity of the writer. Really a must have, if you're into that sort of thing.
Meanwhile, I was shocked and saddened to find the man himself in poor health, wheelchair bound and on oxygen, looking frail.

He was selling stacks of them at the pre-Willie week launch-fest but so far it doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere else for sale, not even NPU's Willie week shop in the hall, or Custy's for that matter (and those would be the places you'd expect to have copies for sale).

Oh, that breaks my heart to hear. He's one of my favorite musicians, bar none. Even though I've never met him, I've become very fond of him through years of listening. His "An Exciting Evening ..." recording is dear friend. I'll watch Custy's website and see if the book appears there.

Here's the story: Tommy Peoples is selling the book on his own during the Willie Clancy week, cutting out the middlemen. He's in a house on the Flag Road and has set up shop there. I took a forum member there yesterday, they bought the book and we had a nice old chat with the man himself (and I took a bunch of snaps of him signing the book).
I spoke to John from Custy's earlier and he expects to have the book available from Saturday.

The Donegal News was teasing an "exclusive" interview supposedly in their Friday edition, and I see their online dailies are available only to subscribers. I do see that one can purchase a single issue, but not clear whether it's the edition of your choice. Will buy it if I can have that one....The book apparently includes written music to some of his tunes . . .
I had no idea he was so ill. It's distressing to see . . .

As I said above, 130 of them. Plus the tunes in the tutor section. The tunes quietly lay to rest the myth Irish music is only played in the keys of D and G.The book apparently includes written music to some of his tunes . . .
And here is the Donegal News 'teaser' article, for anyone interested

Tommy has a new website where you can purchase the book directly from him - http://www.tommypeoples.ie/ He will personally sign each copy ordered. The site just has a holding page at the moment, with a paypal button, but should be fully operational tomorrow. The book is substantial, and includes full transcription of all Tommys compositions, in his own notation. The memoirs and stories in the book are really fascinating!
