Beoga Concert in San Diego
For any interested, Beoga (ITM band) will be in Ocean Beach on March 2, at the Holy Trinity Parish Hall. I've never heard them before, but perhaps someone who has can give an opinion of their music/style. Apparently the Parish has several ITM concerts a year. Paddy Keenan was there in september. For more info, check out their website:http://www.holytrinityob.com/

Actually, that was last September. A brilliant night, with our own Ben Power joining Paddy and John Walsh on stage. Not to mention good craic with Paddy over a bowl of chili after the gig.gallant_murray wrote:Paddy Keenan's gonna be there in september.

Hope you can make it to Beoga, Ramzy. Fr. Bausch is passionate about the music, and puts on a very nice concert. The staff is all-volunteer, and I believe most of the door money goes to the performers.
We asked Paddy and John about the band, and they said they thought Beoga are very worth seeing, especially with their unusual double-box work (like this demo at Custy's). They're a bit off the straight and narrow trad path.

Indeed you were, Ramzy. It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely wife. A very enjoyable evening.gallant_murray wrote:I'll be there.
A fine concert, great playing and sound, high energy, and much humor. Off the straight and narrow trad path does describe them. Mostly their own tunes, highly arranged, with a few standards like Trip to Cullenstown in the mix. They remind me a bit of Gráda, a trad sound but with more of an eclectic slant toward ... Café Jazz? Hot Club Swing? Steely Dan? It's hard to describe.
The double accordion work is very impressive; both Damian McKee and Seán Óg Graham play VanderAA boxes. Excellent fiddling and vocals from Niamh Dunne, and mighty piano backup from Liam Bradley. Bodhránista Eamon Murray really drives the group, both musically and personally. His single-stick playing is very articulate, though his tendency toward a kind of high-pitched tick-tockiness wore on me a bit.
A worthwhile experience if they come your way. After California this week, they move on to Ohio and Michigan on their US tour.
