Goldwave Query

Post by ausdag »

Hi Tony, or anyone else who knows anything about Goldwave.

I've been having trouble compressing MP3 files that I record. At first when I recorded a tune at 44100Hz 128kbs, and then tried to compress to 1600Hz 128kbs that would result in a smaller file size. Good.

The trouble is, lately when I do the same thing, I can no longer get a smaller file size. In fact it often ends up slightly larger :-?

For example, I recorded a tune at 44100Hz 128kbs which ended up as 935kb. When I try to compress it by saving as 16000Hz 128kbs, it ends up as 936kb.

Any ideas?

Regards,

I don't know the actual answer to that, but I'm guessing the 128kb is a big deciding factor in file size. I do a final compression on peoples' files when I receive them at 16000, 48kb. This keeps the sound pretty well preserved. I've noticed if there's a clean recording with acoustic guitar or pipes, I might save it at 16000, 54kb to preserve the nuances of the instrument.

I haven't looked at the goldwave website in a long time, but I'm guessing there's a help line there.

Tony,

Where do you find that option in GoldWave? Mine doesn't seem to go below 32000, or am I just clueless?

Carol,
You're using File, Save As... right? In the Save as Type field, choose MPEG Audio (*.mp3). In the attributes field are all the compression options.

Thanks Tony, I've worked out what I was doing wrong. You're right, it depends on the Kb rather than the Hz.

Cheers,

Tony, that option just isn't, well, an option in my version, apparently. The lowest mine goes is 32000 64kb. There's no way to create that file attribute by hand?

Thanks, though.

File attribute bny hand? I seriously doubt it. If you're a registered user, you can most likely upgrade for free. You must have an old version.
