Yeah, I’ve stuck em up for sale. Nice hints from you folk before. No secret. They’ve sat in my cupboard for the past 6 years. I got them from a lady from the north of Scotland, who had originally got them from north of England in the 80s. They’ve left a few pipemakers scratching their heads! I’d hold on to them if it weren’t for a nasty bill!

Hi,

Is the drone set reeded and, if so, how is it playing?

Do you know what type of metalwork and wood it is made from?

Any word of what became of the original chanter?

Thank you.

The Jefferies practice set mentioned above is clearly meant for a left handed player, from the position of the blowpipe stock.

Going out on a limb I'd guess greenheart for the timber, which true enough it seems Rowsome used sometimes. The metalwork looks like chrome plate to me - at first I thought that it could've been 'retro-plated' at a later date, until there was a set of Leon's drones sold in France a year or so ago looked very similar, but in ebony. The shorter 2 drones have an almost Kiernan vibe to the turning, pretty similar to my Kiernan c drones, which are also greenheart.....The bass drone has the short ferrule on the slide (versus one proportionally longer than the middle drone) which although a reasonably common design isn't something I've seen in Leo's stuff. (Not seen that in Far Eastern made sets either mind you)

Does anyone have a decent photo of drones known to be by Leon Rowsome?

A

The Harrington that was stolen was measured by Mick Wilkins. I have one of maybe two sets he made from those drawings, but where they are I do not know. My set was made sometime before the set was stolen I think. This is him with my copy back in the early 80s.

There were a couple of dodgy listings for the perennial Crowley and Kennedy sets. Looks like an eagle-eyed chiff and fippler has been in touch with eBay as they've already been removed.
