I heard an interview (of S Ennis?) where he mentioned that Johnny Doran played an old flat set in his caravan in the evenings.

The Coyne may be Johnny's as Michael Cash did not play the pipes and was only posing with them. I believe the young boy is Johnny's son, not Michael's son.

That was the one in my mind's eye. Thanks!

The pictures of Johnny Doran are in issue 6.2 of An Píobaire - http://www.pipers.ie/piobaire/PIOB0602s.PDF

There's no reason to be wondering about this kind of thing. We are always happy to respond to enquiries.

Thanks for posting that Terry, as I did not have that issue.

"Postcolonial Artist? Seems interesting and is 350 pgs which to me seems pretty lengthy. It appears to be out of print though, so the price is maybe a little high. Any Comments?" chaos97

"Looks like it's still in print, or copies left anyway from 2008. It's 105 pages though. amazon/uk have it and the Swedish sites. Could be interesting as one author is a piper and seems clued up. I've ordered a copy from England, cheaper. Abe's Books have it for double the price 96 USD? http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchR ... &x=37&y=12" Steampacket

The book arrived yesterday 25 sterling + 5 postage. A nice little book with all the known photos of Johnny including the studio portrait in "Free spirits" of Johnny as a young man sitting with his pipes. The Mlltown Malbay group photo with Johnny sitting on a low wall isn't included though (prehaps I've missed it as I looked quickly through the book). Apart from the text there's transcriptions of the 1947 recordings and two recorded interviews with Jimmy Doran and Mickey Dunne. The Jimmy Doran interview gives a little more information about Johnny's dad John Doran, and his brother Patsy Doran who was a sniper in WW1!!! Haven't had time to read the book yet, but I'm happy with it, well worth buying. Amazon uk have 1 left in stock now since I bought the other one

Thanks Peter, that's the one. That bass drone slide looks like a Coyne, the chanter looks very Rowsome

That should be Pat Cash not Michael. I wonder if the boy is Johnny's son, Jimmy Doran who attends the Doran weekends?

There are several photos floating around which purport to be Johnny Doran but which may not be. The two photos above are generally accepted to be of Johnny but there is doubt about several others.
