David Quinn often asks "why polish them?" Be wary of the fact that some of the ammonia-based compounds may cause corrosion and ruin the keywork. Let 'em develop a nice patina!

Also, David is no longer in the business of making bag covers. It takes too much time, most recipients ultimately take them off or make one to suit their own tastes, and I gather that he'd rather spend his time making pipes instead.

That IS a lovely set of pipes. The contrast of the mainstock to the rest of the set is really nice and adds visual interest to the set.

The true artisan and craftsman or instrument maker may be saddened to part with a piece, or in this case, a set of pipes, but they are honored to have them in the hands of their customers who will treat them with respect, and care for them in order to preserve them for future generations of pipers. Most every set they make at the moment is superior to the sets that BK has in his possession. David, bless his being, even has sold his own beloved sets to get them out there for the enjoyment of others. They will delight in hearing Pat play his set in public. I am sure they will be proud as he will indeed do it justice for many years to come.

Thanks, Lewis, for the kind words. They won't rot in my closet, that's for sure, and I know you're going to play the beehive every chance you get.

I hope I do get a chance to play them for David soon, he was away on some personal business when I came by the shop to pick them up. But he told me in email that he really enjoyed playing this set, and after about 30 seconds with the thing in my lap I found out why. It's what you expect from a nice set of flat pipes - quiet, sweet, and responsive with lots of tonal possibilities, no muss, no fuss.

BTW - Chief O'Neill's has added a finished "attic" with its own bar and many beautifully illuminated portraits of old pipers - Tom Carthy, May McCarthy, Donnchadh O Laoighaire and his massive 5-reg Moloney pipes, Patsy Touhey, Samuel Rowsome, and a few others. The Touhey photo is great, it's the one where he is posed with his pipes, wearing a black suit and top hat, with a wisecrack is just behind his smile.

What key is that set of drones tuned for Davey? It looks long...maybe it's
just the photo. BTW, those are fine looking pipes!

Liner notes for Naomi's Fancy's First CD

Cuts 2 and 8 feature the pipes, cut 2: "The May Morning Dew - Slow Air - Uilleann pipes solo by Phil Sexton. The chanter was made by Seth Gallagher. The rest of the half set was made by Mark Hillmann. The drones were tuned down to C. The bass drone reed is a composite brass body with a spruce tongue. Phil learned this tune from Mick O'Brien's "May Morning Dew" album."

Cut 8: "An Ghaoth Aneas or The South Wind - Our favorite Irish waltz." features the pictured set.

Here is a picture of my Lynch Half Set.

Made in 1990, Honduran Rosewood and Brass. I'm using my own bellows and connector as they are lighter, more comfortable and easy to strap on and off. I'm very satisfied with the sound and the quality of the workmanship.
