So who made your pipes Davey? Is it a Samick set and an old Britton set?

The tenor and bari drones in the middle that are diconnected look nice, what make are they?

Patrick.

Thanks..the set on the bottom is my Britton set..don't play it much as it's not as stable as the other set.....

the other set and the drones in the middle are of my own manufacture. The one on top..pale wood is a set I made from apple..a great fruitwood for pipes actually...and the two middle drones are part of a flat B set I'm making for someone out of ebony and boxwood.

If you look closely at the apple set..you can see an "extra" piece..it's confusing..it's an extra bass drone tuning slide. The straight bore tuning slide that's on the set now has a tapered conical bore which balances out the sound waves quite well and ends up being a nice round tone...it's a much more "present" open or louder bass than my britton set..which tends to me rather "tinny" sounding ..or closed sounding. I'm working an another set in apple, and another in the ebony..I'll post pics for these eventually if any are interested! I'm working on a set of boxwood and cocobolo using hand rolled nickel silver.
Oh...the mainstock ferrules on the apple set are hand rolled...
Cheers..
Davey

Thanks again Tony...I'mstill working on that website!

Nice work Davey,

Are you apprenticing with anyone? Where are you getting your measurments? I presume you're making the reeds too?

I noticed what you describe about the bass drone, thanks for clarifying it.

Patrick.

PS - I meant to say "Simack" not "Samick" in my last post above

Patrick,

Thanks for the kind words Patrick! I'll email you a private response to your question.

I wish I had a better camera/scanner combo. I have been VERY happy with the results I've gotten from th apple wood. It is truly an EXCELLENT fruitwood for pipes. And looks simply stunning up close...If I use just a wee bit of cherry stain on the apple, it really brings out the grains and figure in the apple...I guess you could call it the "poor man's boxwood"

Hi,
welcome to the dark side indeed!! thats what my wife said as she pointed to the garden shed. Hi Kevin, you could say I'm excited, went to get the pipes today and got the first lesson, playing the scale and trying to play a steady note, feels totally weird. Saw lots of pipe parts, some really old pipes and got a few CD recomendations as if I need to spend more money

Cheers, Mac
