David Quinn would be the man to take on this subject in earnest. He wrote a wonderful dissertation on bellows for Iris an bPiobaire The Pipers' Review a few years back http://www.irishpipersclub.org/ and may be archived in the "other" forum. I'll have a rummage around and see if I can find it there.

I really like the "alternative" wood and leather hinge. It looks like a relatively easy conversion if you wanted to get away from the leather strap hinge. Hmmmm, the wheels are turning!

That's the method I have on my Benson bellows that I mentioned earlier. What I like about it is that you can easily adjust the tension.
