Case revelations?

The photos above is the case I had once that I got from Savage and Hoy in England the size of the case outside diameter is 33” x 13.5” x 6”

That looks just like my case, fergus, but mine is 32" x 12" x 5 1/2" (outside).

I saw a case today I totally covet but couldn't bring myself to buy. It's a Zero Halliburton aluminum alloy gun case . . . it weighs like a pound.

The double case looks perfect; you could cut the inside to fit the drones and little regs, and then make separate channels for the bass reg and chanter. Mmmmmmmmmmm. But it's like $300.

Still, a pretty case.

The gun's a Browning. I am not exactly sure which model, but I know it's a Browning.

Looks nice (the aluminum case) but may only be 4" deep for guns. You'd want 5-6" deep for a full set with regs etc.

$300 for a case to protect a $7000 set of pipes sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Don't go cheap now.

Where'd you get $7000? That would have been a nice price.

It actually would fit the regs and stuff, without allowing them to bang anround and still allowing for padding. They quote 4" but it is a little more than that, closer to 5".

But I'm still thinking.

Stu, not an actual price, just a point of scale. I have a vinyl gun case, but even after replacing
all the heavy gun foam with something lighter, I still have to jump on it to close it over the
bellows, et al. 4" is pretty much a standard depth for all gun cases. Too bad, cuz those sure
look like nice cases.

Maybe the manufacturer has a deeper case, or would consider making one for you. If they
do, I would be very interested.

Hmm. Yeah, mebbe you're right.

Can you see me lugging a full set into a gun store to see if the thing would fit? Heh!

Well, I'll keep looking. I like the gig bags listed on Seth's site, too, but then . . . they're soft-sided.

I know of a couple of guitar cases that have a 4" gap before the foam is compressed. That might work, for a big case. I have also been looking at cases at this site . . .

Shoot, wait 7 years for the pipes, you've got to do your homework to find a good case.

Stewart - I took a flute into a gun shop to do just that. What I expected and what I experienced were two very different things. The guys at the shop had a real appreciation for the craftsmanship and detail, even though they knew nothing about flutes. They were very helpful in bringing out all kinds of cases. Can't say I've seen any show up at the session, however.

Okay...here's the custom one...cost around $200

in it I can fit
full set without taking things apart
extra reeds
music stand
piping stool
two low whistles
two tinwhistles
three chanters
all my piping music (not in the photo, i just lay it on top before closing)
tool kit (superglue, duct tape, waxed dental floss, wax, scotch tape, etc etc)
