According to Dave Hegarty,s book the average CP chanter reed is between 78-83mm long.

What is "CP"?

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

I think Benedict Koehler regularly uses 85 - 86 mm reeds, so 87 doesn't seem extraordinary.

I think they tend to average 84 mm, but I don't doubt that occasionally, longer reeds do occur.

I have trying to make some reeds of my own without much success.I recently got a copy of “the heart of the Instrument” which has been a great help .I tried taking Mr Koehler,s advise and listening to the cane, but it keeps telling me to f**k off.

But I am amazed by all the different measurements that seem to work .Ive seen a working reed that is 75 mm long right up to the reed I have which is 87mm long ,all very confusing when your starting to make reeds

It's not like machining some thing in metal that won't move; we are dealing with an organic material. So what's 2mm between friends???
