Hi,

I thought I had them. I see Brad Angus connection won this little battle. As Justgreatstuff1 is the contact for Brad Angus to sell his pipes on ebay.

Well-done Brad and good tactic to use Kevin to do a little bit of a spin on the board to keep the interest down. I wish you all the very best with the set, at least a piper and pipemaker got them.

That was kind of exciting. Here's the results. We know "justgreatstuff1" from other sales, right? Glad he didn't get it for a bargin as he seems to do eBay as a business. I'm sure it would cost 3K or more to have them professionally restored. I'd rather put my money into a nice new set from some maker that I new.

Sold!

Post by Piobairi Uilleann Inis Fa »

Well the final price in the closing seconds was US$3675. :boggle: It looked for a second (until the last 4) that it would go for $2125, but then two last second bids drove it like lightening with literally 3 seconds left. Good luck to the buyer, who actually appears to be a dealer in old musical stuff. In fact both of the last bidders appear to deal in either old or musical stuff from their ebay activity.

I wonder what the high bidder's final high offer was?

I think that since you can find little instant gratification due to lengthy wait periods for pipes from the best makers, people are scrambling for pipes like these on the hop that when restored they might have a grand set, that is limited of course and at a bargain price. For those that might doubt the "bargain" comment, try estimating what a quality set restored by a great present day maker will fetch in say 10 or 15 years. I assure you that it will be better than treasury notes, be less risky than the DJIA and will be much more fun to play, to boot! (I was another loosing bidder near the end)

Watching the counter in the closing minutes jumped about 15 hits every time I refreshed the screen... which was ever 30 seconds or so.

That was a great idea to post the counter here Tony. I noticed that when srfmowman first posted this sale on c&f last night, the counter was only up to 900 or so. I think the counter changes every time someone enlarges a pic on the eBay sale, or views the bidding results, so in actuality probably only a couple hundred people actually visisted the auction.

I also noticed some activity on the U-LIST right after the sale was posted on c&f.

Lorenzo,
I'm not sure how the counter works. Some actually count unique DNS's so hitting refresh doesn't add to the total... making it more accurate.
I refreshed 3-4 times really fast and the counter didn't change.

I'm sure you're right about the refresh button Tony. I noticed that when I had the bidding results page set so I could forward and back (> & < buttons) the pages first, then refresh the bidding results page without refreshing the pictures page(it's quicker that way if all you want is to see the new bid results) the counter never changed. But if I enlarged a picture, I lost my forward > page to the bidding results. Thus. I'm sure the counter was changed, in fact I know it changed. Hope that makes sense!

I feel your pain. The Brad connection probably needs them real bad, you know...not enough pipes around, and you probably have way to many, right?

Do any of you UP historians know (roughly) how many sets of pipes were made by Willie Rowsome?

I knew it had to be a maker or collector, I don't know what he's going to do with them, part of the fourth regs missing by the looks of it, maybe he'll make a sound sample of the set for us when he gets them going,
especially them three old chanters,I would have thought he could have made a better set for him self, just because there an old set don't mean they were any good, there were plenty of old duff sets made, I could understand it if the set had been a Coyne or Harrington but if the buyers happy so be it, no doubt they'll be refurbished and back on the market for
triple the price, thats my three penny worth. 8)

It's an old Willie Rowsome set to my eyes with two Patsy Browne chanters, maybe three. If this set is untampered with it could prove to be a nice set. Wouldn't mind the challenge of getting them going myself!

Dear Whiners Image

As you may have surmised, I was in on this from early on, when I came home and found a message on my answering machine of Brad Angus saying "Old pipes...old pipes..." Nothing unusual there, I called him up and asked what the incoherent rant was all about.
I thought they were a budget model Harrington myself, judging from the reg endcaps, which are similar to Harrington, only not so fancy. Someone else thought they were a Coyne, judging from the drone ends, perhaps. Turns out we're both right, in a way. It didn't take Brad long to ID them, about which he was altogether smug! But they are undoubtedly a Willie set.
You saw how much GreatStuff paid for them, and I imagine he would have gone a bit higher, too. There's no competing with buckage like that, alas. When I thought they were a Harrington set I was thinking I'd maybe bid pretty high myself, but Willie R. doesn't yank my crank quite so much, I didn't bid at all, and I would have lost anyway, so there you are. The restoration will cost a heap, too; and like I said, it might be a Bb set converted to D; pretty painful.
GreatStuff sells pipes, too; here's hoping those chanters at least will come up again. My P Brown's a great chanter, and once the corrosion's off these might be splendid sticks. And don't forget the keyless chanter with the engraved napkin holder on the bottom (found in the 1903 Sears and Roebuck catalog).

I suppose that the long since defunct 1966 Pontiac Ventura that my dad bought me when I was 16 (and it was 11) has a better chance of being restored at the moment.

Theres two sets here, a practice set, and a full set with two chanters
the full set started life as a flat set with 3 or 4 regs, I think then altered
to a Concert set, there are two bass returns in the pictures, parts of the
tenor & baratone drones are missing from the set, have you seen the size of the note holes on the third chanter, dear me. I think you would
loose most of your curls trying to get this set going patrick, you might
get the bass drone and the chanters going thats if the bags O.K, I think the
two chanters with a clean & service and a new reed would play O.K with
another concert set, I'm not so sure about the regs?have my doubts, but
then again, I think it probably was a lovely set before it was altered, the brass metal work I think is Beautifully crafted the bass reg mounting plate has shamrocks cut outs on the plate edges, some nice turning also on the
ivory mounts, but then again who knows, all the best.
