Duala film - Willie Clancy

Post by Steampacket »

Saw the film Duala by Maurice Gunning & Jack Talty the other day. There is a fine sequence where Willie Clancy has a fag going and seems to be using tap and die equipment in a workshop, after which he is seen playing the Seán Reed Rowsome set, although the music heard is from a B set, (an observation by Jar Henderson on the FB uilleann piping forum). Willie sounds great on this recording, the set is in tune his fingers are flying. Willie comes in at 13:54 minutes:

I was at the premiere of the film during a brief easing of lockdown restrictions late summer 2020 ( see here )

The discrepancy between what you see and what you hear when Willie is playing is slightly disturbing although it must be said sound and image fit remarkably well and this probably won't bother anyone other than a few pipers. The same fragment was also used by either ITMA or WCSS (or both) for the first virtual Willie week.

ITMA and the Clare arts office commissioned another Duala project this year in which Nuala Kennedy and Tara Breen explored the music of some Clare women, Kitty Hayes, Nell Galvin, Nora Cleary and Mary Haren : Duala 2: Ag Lorg Ár Líne with Nuala Kennedy & Tara Breen
