Hi.
I’m posting this in both the whistle and pipes forums.
I’m after some help.
I’ve been asked to record the Reconcilliation Reel on someone’s album in the key of D on the pipes. Does anyone know of any good arrangements that could be played alongside a fiddle playing the standard arrangement?
Cheers
John

Re: Reconciliation Reel
Best version I have heard is the John McSherry recording of the Dublin Reel/Reconciliation.
I couldn't think of a better way to spend .89 cents!
The sample gets into it a little bit: https://www.amazon.com/The-Dublin-Reel- ... B0038FBMOC

Re: Reconciliation Reel
Thanks for your reply.
I’m good with it in A bit am after an arrangement where it could be played in D (goes lower than the low D)
Thanks again

Re: Reconciliation Reel
If you can play it in A, just transpose it yourself, but you'll have to get creative with the folding.
I don't understand what you mean when you say "a fiddle playing the standard arrangement." Does that mean the fiddler will be playing it in A? I don't see how you can play it in one key and they can play it another and how that can possibly work. Or has the fiddler transposed it to D? (if so, it begs the question, why?),

Re: Reconciliation Reel
A singer-songwriter I’ve been doing some work with has written a song and is using the reel in the breaks in D (the song is in D). I’ve played tenor banjo on the recording and he is asking for pipes too. What I mean by the fiddler playing the original tune is he (and the banjo) is playing the tune as written (but in D as they can go lower than the pipes obviously). I was just asking for any advice or ideas anyone had, or had heard, of melodies that could replace the lower sections of the tune I can’t reach but will sound ok musically with the fiddle/banjo playing the normal tune.
Hope this makes sense.

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Re: Reconciliation Reel
It works fine if you just put every low B and A up an octave. It sounds fine on its own that way, and will sound perfectly OK played alongside fiddle.

Okay, that makes sense.
Then folding, as Ben described.

Cheers for that. I’ll give it a go.benhall.1 wrote:It works fine if you just put every low B and A up an octave. It sounds fine on its own that way, and will sound perfectly OK played alongside fiddle.

Re: Reconciliation Reel
I used to play this tune in A and i got sick of it on the pipes, It sits much better in G. (on the pipes at least)
As for D I haven't a clue!
Tell your fiddler to cop on, the piper always picks the key!
