Felix Doran in a Ceiidh band 1964?

Post by Steampacket »

Just noticed that Felix Doran is playing in what seems to be a ceilidh band here in this BBC video clip from 1964 at the all-Ireland Fleadh Ceoil in Clones, Co Monaghan. Felix can be seen piping starting at 1:21 minutes until 1:26 minutes in the video. Then later on in the video clip playing "The cook in the kitchen" in an outdoor session starting at 3:39 until 4:12 minutes. Another piper I can't identify can be seen playing in a outdoor session starting at 2:59 until 3:16 minutes

Yes it is Brian. I believe that it's Josie McDermott and Tommy Flynn playing at 3:13 until Felix starts to play at 3:39 minutes.

Always fun looking at these things and trying to find familiar faces, trying to recognise them when they were decades younger than you may have ever seen them. The fluteplayer with the fiddleplayer and piper, playing the First House, Paddy Taylor perhaps? Young Andy Irvine with Luke Kelly and David Hammond putting down the Hot Ashphalt. No others yet after one viewing. \Well, apart from Barney McKenna obviously at the start. Anyone recognise others?

Piper playing with Paddy Taylor looks like Willie Reynolds.

Well spotted John.

The fiddle and flute player from the later trio are from their ranks so that should probably make it easier to put a name on them. Not Paddy Taylor then, I suppose.

I played a few tunes with Seán McNamara in Crotty's at one time. An old fella came up to him after a while to talk to him about the Liverpool Ceiliband, almost in tears at the memories it brought up. Opened my eyes to how populat the bands were during the sixties.

The axe wielding fellow at 2.00 is David Hammond. I also see compelling evidence at 0.40 that coneheads had actually visited this planet before the 90's

The musicians around 3.13 are Con Curtain, landlord of the Balloon pub in Lots Rd.London, and the flute player is Paddy Taylor, who made a nice LP about 10 years later, and also lived in London.
