For sure this is the situation in my native West Virginia.

We have an annual event called the Vandalia Gathering that has contests in various categories including fiddling, dancing, storytelling, and baking.

The highlight of the event is usually regarded as the storytelling contest. The more absurd and humorous the story, the better!

Ennis would have fit right in.

BTW the early 20th century thing of the Irish piper being a musician and comedian is alive and well in Asturias in the person of Vicente Praviano, an amazingly gifted piper, pipe maker, singer, and stand-up comic.
