Hi All,
With reference to the above tune, which is know by this title from the playing of Patsey Touhey, I found the tune below, in an anonymous C19th MS in the Vaughn Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp House, London.
Clearly miss barred as 6/8, it has a close resemblance to Munster Gimlet.
Has anyone else come across this before?

Just wondering why you are saying that - to me it looks like it is 6 of 1/8th notes per bar(?).Clearly miss barred as 6/8

For my eyes, although it scans as written, it works better as 9/8.

OK, thanks - just that it's normally done as/in a different time signature - I'm still trying to learn to read notation, & I thought I was missing something.

Looks like there is a Canon Goodman variant too called Is Duine me siubhal a lán (v1, 254, tune 3). In D major though.

Re: Munster Gimlet
Another interesting thing: there was a sloop called the "Irish Gimblet" which seems to have been operating as a privateer in the 1760 - 1770s.
This may itself have been inspired by the title of a comic poem printed in 1742 in London called "Dermot and Cicely or the Irish Gimblet" - somewhat bizarrely described as "an erotic pastoral with references to cricket". Alternatively I suppose the tune, ship name and poem are all derived from some bawdy joke now lost.
If nothing else this does point towards the sort of mid 18th century period so many of these dance tunes originate from.

Not just your eyes and not just 'better'... that's 100% 9/8 tune and just wrong as anything else!Dave R wrote:For my eyes, although it scans as written, it works better as 9/8.

You just know that "asking rate", "bang it in" and "bouncer" would be involved.bensdad wrote:"an erotic pastoral with references to cricket"
