Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me with suggestion which to buy and where to buy prewaxed threads online (Europe prefered) ?
I need them for next operations:
A: reed binding
B: for bottom of the reed which is pushed into the chanter
C: for the neck insert & part of the chanter where the metal or wooden top is on
D: for tying in the stocks to bag

Probably one thread is not suitable for all these operations, so what do you prefer to use?

It's heavy duty and prewaxed. I'm sure some of the pipemakers might have something better.

It's worth paying the extra shipping from the states. The cobblers wax is really good stuff.

search online for Crawford waxed linen thread from the N of Ireland. Comes in various plies (and colours). Very fine stuff. I go through spool after spool of it. If you can only find the 4 ply, you can always divided it to two or single ply as needed.

For tying in bags I use NPU polyamide waxed thread, doubled or tripled up, as needed.

For bridles the NPU thread can be split if carefully done, with a finger nail.

For reed seating, NPU sells waxed yellow hemp, and this does a good job.

The post above describing waxed 'heavy weight' hemp, is idea for reed head bindings, but it can be purchased with more availability as unwaxed thread. It can be waxed up per pro Geoff Woof method with either bees wax of cobblers wax.

For reed binding - artificial sinew of the sort JR posted although mine is flat rather than round like seems to be in the picture in JR's link
for reed seat part of the reed - plain ordinary sewing cotton thread, no wax
for the neck inset (chanter top inlet pipe to chanter stock) - plain ordinary cotton sewing thread, no wax (as I also use for all drone slides and other bindings)
for tying in - artificial waxed sinew as above - it's super strong, has a nice stretch but can take a lot of pull without snapping.

Sorry, not from Europe, but here's my secret source. Thinnest stuff is what I searched the planet for for ten years and finally found 45 minutes from where I now live. Great for the joints that don't need to move. I use it for reeds too.
