Just ask the airline your are flying on. I don't think any commercial airlines have sub-zero temperatures in the baggage hold. Air Canada, for example has this to say: http://enroute.aircanada.com/en/article ... ggage-hold. When I have had to gate check a bag, I always check it as soon as I get it and it is never super cold inside.
