Congratulations and a big thanks to NPU for the work they put into the submission to UNESCO , and to all the pipers out there who keep the ball rolling congratulation also.
I was wondering Terry if you have the time to explain, what will this mean to Uilleann piping as a whole ?

Hi Rory

The nomination was for 'Uilleann Piping', and inscription on the Representative List is an end in itself. Essentially it is a signal that our shared art has been declared to be valuable to all humanity.
At NPU, we hope that pipers throughout the world will embrace this recognition. It is theirs, and they should have a legitimate pride in the fact that their favourite music has been recognised as a precious part of human heritage.
We also hope that this recognition will bring uilleann piping to the attention of more and more people. That would be good for piping, pipers and pipemakers. More players, more makers, more sessions, more audiences, more everything!

Thanks Terry for your reply , I must admit even though I have been involved with piping for a long time this does add an extra element of pride, so again thanks to NPU and all involed with the UNESCO recognition procedure .

It's great stuff.

It even got a mention on RTE's one o' clock news with a little bit of footage of (I believe) Robbie Hughes playing the pipes in his workshop (not yet on the player but the item was right towards the end, once it goes up)

I see the Guardian chose to mention that Neapolitan Pizza Spinning had been given that same status, but did not mention the pipes.

Yes, pizza twirling and oilwrestling. I initially commented above our inner cynic would smile at what other world cultural achievements the pipes have gained equivalence with. My link to the Guardian article didn't want to work though so I took the whole reference out again. I also had a campaign by a Dutch region I read about some time ago, that tried to get a particular sausage roll on the list, at the back of my mind. But that sort of thoughts shouldn't detract from the achievement.

An outstanding result. Well done NPU.

Now when the wife gives out to me for piping at 3.00 a.m., I can reply by saying that what I'm doing is officially "valuable to all humanity". :tomato:
