Michael Hubbert 1/2 set

Post by firnatine »

I just picked up my Michael Hubbert 1/2 set last week and couldn't be more pleased. Ebony/sterling silver with palm nut mounts. The stock is walnut with Michael's signature scroll. The chanter is modeled after a Leo Rowsome chanter and is his first one ever to come out of his shop. Plays and sounds every bit as good as it looks.

I wish you joy.
Those pipes are stunning.
I hear a Hubbert set played once, and it was amazing.

So if the chanter is Rowsome and the drones are someone else does the set qualify as a Frankenset ?

So interesting that Michael is doing Rowsome, after all these years!

You can be sure that his copies play precisely like the original, Michael is amazing.

The original Rowsome chanter he used was borrowed from Paddy Keenan. Another thing that I found interesting was it was the first time he made a chanter with scalloped holes.

I don't want to post any sound files of my playing since I'm still very much a beginner and will not represent them properly. If I can get my tutor to play them, I'll be sure to record it and post.

Didn't Keenan alter the Rowsome chanter he played to a great extend? Of course the copy may have been done from another, original and unaltered, chanter he owned.

The story that was relayed to me was Paddy received a Rowsome set years ago that needed some work. He sent it out to be restored and it was supposedly poorly done. The chanter Hubbert used wasn't touched.

I seem to remember that restoration being documented thoroughly on this forum or am I mistaken? Great marketing exercise. Image

I think the set you are referring to was missing the chanter - just drones and regulators.

I was just thinking out loud, I seem to remember a set owned by Keenan being restored, I don't know any specifics, who did it or the configuration of the set. I didn't follow the subject. Perhaps I put 2 and two together and ended up with 5.

Well that can't be the same one that went to Hubbert then.

Paddy had the body of the set restored by Martin. I heard it was redone after. Paddy kept the chanter from the set and Michael copied it. It is a 14 3/8" chanter and Michael's copy plays well at A440.

I did restore a Rowsome set for Paddy and he was happy with the work as Rory rightly pointed out. Paddy had told me that the set was previously in the hands of another maker for work but from what I can gather it didn't work out. That was a long time before I was a maker. I did the repairs and restoration for free and the only work that was done when I had finished my part was reeds chanter and bellows all of which were not present when I got the set.
