So I made this reed...

Post by Christoffer »

Hiya.

Just a couple of days ago, I recieved my no.6 Ashley Iles gouge from NPU, and I'm having a lot of fun trying to understand the fundamentals of reedmaking!

On my second attempt I managed to make a reed that played well in tune across the two octaves in my penny-chanter, but it just won't play high C# and 3rd D :-?
The cane I used was rather hard. Any ideas as to why this is? I really want to give Queen of the Fairies a spin again :sniffle:

It may be best to do nothing at the moment, it's still a very new reed and should soften up over the next few weeks and hopefully the top notes will come; it's really easy to overwork a new reed so it works well new initially but a while later dies. Just play it as is and see what happens.
