Here goes, then...

And here is what I received:
Hello kkrell,

You are receiving this notification because you are watching the forum
"Forum Support" at "Chiff and Fipple Forums". This forum has received a new
topic by Nanohedron since your last visit, "Forum subscriptions check". You
can use the following link to view the forum, no more notifications will be
sent until you visit the forum.

viewforum.php?f=5

If you no longer wish to watch this forum you can either click the
"Unsubscribe forum" link found in the forum above, or by clicking the
following link:

viewforum.php?uid=1333&f=5&unwatch=forum

Now I'll try waiting for things to stack up for awhile (without my visiting this forum), and see if I get responses regarding each of these or other topics. I would expect to receive only one or two notifications, as they should stop if I don't visit. If you have anything to add to other Forum Support topics to update them, I'll see if I get notified multiple times (ie: everytime a topic is updated in this forum), or only only once. I'm sure one of the how to post a picture threads could use an update.

My understanding from the quoted message is that I only get one notification EVER, unless I visit the forum again. So, the "Subscribe Forum" feature is not particularly useful if what one wants is to get emails that tell you what topics are new or active to decide whether to visit or not. A saved Google Search is probably more helpful to get emails of new activity.

I'll try here and on the original topic, first. Can't come up with material for any of the other topics, yet.

Got this (notification of 1 reply post, but not your reply on another thread in the same forum). I also did not get a notification for the UIE forum that I'm subscribed to (because I did not respond/visit after an earlier notification). So, it's working as I predicted, and the OP in the other Forum Support thread is just using it wrong, and must have skipped a visit, so he essentially got cut off from further notifications. You get one notice and one notice only (either per forum, or per topic, depending on how you subscribed), and that's final. Visit & notifications resume.

It's moderately useful to Subscribe to Topics, hardly useful to Subscribe to Forums. The only reason for the latter would be if you wanted to know if anyone ever posted to "Pictures of Flanges, Poems about Dental Hygiene, Recipes for Hummus" or another rarely visited forum.

I think we could preliminarily call "CASE CLOSED" on the support issue. Forum behavior, can't be helped. My experience on other forums supports this behavior as being a typical implementation, just not ideal. The Microsoft Community was the only example I can think of that continues to notify you of replies to a thread regardless of whether you return or not.

Slightly off topic but, I always use the View New Posts link, never bother subscribing, just a quick visit, click the link, & read what I want. :)

(I do this on all my forums that I use, computer, harmonica, ukulele, & here.)
