Hasn't worked yet. There has been a free version of Pro Tools out there, off and on, for maybe 15 years, if not more. The versions I have limit the number of audio tracks available. And it is a usable DAW if you don't want or need all the bells and whistles. It serves as a good introduction into the DAW software world. Just remember that it is a gateway drug.

It won't wipe out the competition thanks to the brains vs. money, er, I mean, cost vs. benefit analysis surrounding Pro Tools. It is a good product for the professional who will be recouping their initial costs overtime by charging clients but it is not easily justified for home studio use.

I do have friends/associates that have mortgaged their homes to buy into Pro Tools. And they produce good recordings with it. But I am not convinced that it offers obvious advantages in technology or audio quality over other platforms. You still have to know what you are doing with any DAW platform.

But, by all means, sign up for Pro Tools First. I have. Don't just look a gift horse in the mouth, as me Gran would say. Whatever that actually means. Just not sure I want to get into the whole cloud storage thing with my music projects. We'll see how it works.

I've been reading NAMM press releases all week. Not much else has been as interesting.

Best to be careful around the mouths of all horses, gift or otherwise. :)
