I would be grateful for advice on software that can be used to slow down recorded tunes. This is so I can learn by ear, pick up tips on ornamentation etc.

The one most seem to use, (including me), is Amazing Slow Downer.

Here's where you can get the freeware version: http://downloads.gufile.com/V1/amazing- ... OgodOlEAIQ

The full product is available here: http://www.ronimusic.com/

Best Practice is open source freeware that works quite well. Audacity is ditto recording software that has a speed/pitch changing function.

The apple any anytune free is legendary. Great for picking through ornamentation and hearing oneself play too. You can slow it down to 50 percent of usual tempo. Jlpsix

If you are an iPhone/iPad user, both TunePal and theCraic offer this capability (and a lot more as well).

I've been a huge fan of "Transcribe" for many years:

http://www.seventhstring.com/

Slows down both audio and video files, allows you to set markers, adjust pitch independent of speed, export files, etc.

Available on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Any recommendations for similar, for Android-based phones?

Being able to mark would be very useful.

In the App Store there is a program called "Replayer." It is super easy to use even for someone who could never get the Amazing Slow Downer to work. Anyway, Replayer does exactly what I want--nothing fancy. I don't know if it works on a PC or other devices because the stack of old PCs in my closet all were destroyed by viruses. But I can vouch for it on my Macs, which have been cruising along for 8, 3, and 1 years respectfully. Worth looking at.

The best free software is easily Sonic Visualizer. It is flat out amazing:

Some of the plugins do things that many people will tell you can't be done.
