brain storming here...

how about using a regular whistle, and developing a soundproof enclosure around the window. The enclosure would contain a small mic and the rest is obvious

Raises the age old question - does a whistle make sound if the voicing window is soundproofed?

point taken.... you would have to enclose the window AND the bell!!!
I suppose the holes emit sound as well :(

Looks like an outgrowth of "the Tidy Cat set".

That's exactly what I was talking about doing.
I don't think you'd have the blocked air problem,
since the air can escape from, you know, the tube.

As for Phidgets (which is new to me), I don't know
if it would gain you anything besides being unable
to shove the sensors in the tube... I mean, Arduino
was designed to be used by artists, not engineers,
so it's not too hard to deal with. Plus there's more
examples on the Net for Arduino, which is why I
prefer it.

[EDIT] Though, I have to admit, Phidgets have
an amazing range of sensors. Looks like the adult
version of littlebits

That looks pretty sweet. What did you use
for air detection? Pressure sensor?

Thanks for the comment. This item had no air-detection. To kludge-around air detection, I used a touch-swtich on the back, under bottom thumb, to start+stop sounding. I put off detecting air in the interest of just getting the other parts working + tested (tones, housing, power, etc). I got that far, and the vagaries of life got in the way. Honestly, since making that item, technology has advanced so far that much smaller/better versions are possible and maybe affordable to a hobbyist.

Your ideas to slide sensors into a Gen tube sound great ! I'm sure the components are around to make it go.

Good luck !

I experimented with enclosures for a while. What I found was really fascinating: if the enclosure was too small, the tones (frequencies+timber) obtained changed dramatically ! In a nutshell, anything that gets too close to the window can alter/corrupt the sounding.

Technopipes being used to practice whistle.

No tonguing though.

If you are attempting your own, have a look at this site http://www.echanter.com/ for some ideas.
