RTTA for Android

Hi all

A quick heads-up about what I'm sure will be a very welcome addition to our armoury of tools for Real Time Tuning Analysis. We have had systems for PC and Mac, then Dan Gordon came out with a version for IOS. The remaining gap was the lack of an app for Android, but Limerick flute player and software developer, Shane O'Dwyer has just plugged that gap with TT Tuner. And even a registered phone idiot like me can get it going!

But perhaps I'm cutting too many corners, so let me invite you to check out my RTTA page where you'll find introductions and links to all of the systems.

And I should have mentioned that people other than flute makers and players would benefit from it, so, multi-instrumentalists, please feel free to pass on the word on other instrument lists.

Great it's available for Android at long last. I've bought the full version, but there's an immediate frustration - it doesn't seem to be possible to calibrate the reference pitch, unless I've missed something. For me that's a big issue with its usefulness. Are the other versions adjustable on that parameter, and whether or not so, can Shane be encouraged to implement that as a feature in an update?

Oh, and it also needs to override timed screen sleep settings whilst being used.
Plus it's not obvious that it saves recordings or if so where they're saved (in "Load" in the very limited drop down menu) or that you can see a list of them and access them. It would also be useful if it could access or import preexisting recordings stored elsewhere on the device.
Without being at all ungrateful/unappreciative, I'd say there's a lot to be improved on this.

I'll draw those issues to Shane's attention, Jem, thanks.

Interesting that I didn't spot the lack of an adjustable tuning centre, given my preoccupations with vintage flutes!

All, keep the suggestions coming. Only you know how you're going to use it, and the developer needs that feedback to help make the product as useful as it can be.

I've left a feedback message to much the same effect on the app in Playstore. :)

A wider range of temperament choices would also be advisable.

Got any suggestions for other temperaments?

Incidentally, can Android multitask? If so, as a workaround with recordings already on the machine, try replaying them while recording on TT Tuner. It won't change the accuracy as it's only the frequency of the note the app needs - it doesn't care about quality (within reason!).

And if that doesn't work, you could transfer them to another device, eg computer, and play them back to the app.

Re accessing recordings, sure, if I wanted to do anything like that urgently.... I'd already thought of such workarounds. I don’t need to right now, but my suggestion for improving the app on that front stands.

Temperaments - no suggestions, but I'm sure the baroque specialists would have some preferences. The popular Cleartune app would likely be a good model. Doing a little research, I note that the gStrings tuner app mentions its source of historical temperaments: "most of the historic temperaments were included courtesy of NetCat AG." I also read review comments on several apps requesting user-definable temperament functionality (preferably by entering Hz values for given notes).

Interestingly, the early flute people haven't shown much interest in RTTA, but, I guess that isn't surprising - it hadn't been invented by then! And I still haven't seen convincing proof that flutes of any era follow the keyboard tuning of that era. They seem mostly to follow chaos theory!

I do think RTTA still has merit in researching the intonation of early flutes - it helps us take the player out of the equation.

Shane advises:

- Added a setting to change A4 reference - You can now specify where to save recordings - The Save location is now displayed in the load screen - The app is now kept awake when in the main record screen - Can now restore the default settings of the app - Corrected the share icon

To which I responded:

Wow, and all done while I slept. I must be entering my most productive period ever!

Hi Terry and Gem,

I haven't installed the app yet, but plan to do so in the near future.
Being one of the baroque people (not a specialist, but a rather new student): 1/4 Meantone would be nice to have in the field of temperaments :)

Kind regards,
Peter

Yes. Music players and internet radio applications typically do this, so it's certainly feasible (radio will continue to run while you're doing other things on the device).

Grand. I'd still like to see the "Load" file renamed as "Recordings" or "Archive" to make it more obvious what it is. And it would be good to have the reference pitch adjustable in a button in the main screen rather than or as well as in Settings in the drop down menu, maybe some of the other settings functions too - that would be a significant improvement to the interface.

Also, this might be a big ask, but what about being able to display and save the results on a given audio sample as a line graph?

After a couple of useful and appreciated upgrade tweaks, I've a couple more suggestions to pass on. The screen sleep override whilst using the app as a tuner or whilst recording is great, but it needs also to override whilst an archived recording is being played back. At present it still blacks out while one is watching the real time chart during playback.

It's now much more obvious where/what the Archive is. :-) However, one more ask: when one long press selects a track file, one then has to reopen the drop down to get the function options (share, rename, delete). It would be much better if they displayed in a pop-up header. My usual recording app (Hi-Q MP3 Rec) does this (it gives Play, Rename, Bin, Share symbols).

I realise this may be in process, but I'd still like a way of exporting the analytical displays, both line graph and the Stats "spot" display - export to/as pdf or some such?

Cheers!
