"Eco" doesn't look at all Irish or Scots Gaelic to me. Could you tell us where you saw this word and why you assume it's from one of these languages?

Yes, I'd assume that "Eco" is the same in Irish as other languages, the international abbreviation or prefix for "ecology". Originally from Greek "oikos", meaning house or household.

By the spelling alone I doubt it's Irish is because it violates the Irish "slender for slender, broad for broad" spelling convention. Of course there are the rare exceptions, and this convention is even less strict in Scots Gaelic, but in both cases where the Greek "eco-" would be adopted, normally Gaelic orthography would be expected to reign. So for example, "ecology" is rendered in Irish as eiceolaíocht.

Perhaps "eco" is a phonetic rendering? This is where Audrey could help us.

i see the cinese word first "回声"，means “The echo”。

so i use GOOGLE translate 回声 or “The echo” to irish gealic， google give me the word“eco”

Google translate often returns funny things.

Which is, indeed, the En->Ir translation that Google Translate returns.

Google Cn->Ir (using the characters that Cai provided) returns "Echo" (not "Eco"). This is an error, and probably a gap in the lexicon with a pass-through default (i.e. if the word is not found, you get the literal).

Er... no, it doesn't. "Catcher" means "catcher", and "wheat fields" means "wheat fields".

I have found some rough translation from research.

回 =

verb: (Trad=迴, Pinyin=hui2) curve, return, revolve

verb: (Trad=回, Pinyin=hui2) circle, go back, turn around, answer, return, revolve

I think you are also using this as a word for "catch" or "catcher"


声 =

noun: (Trad=聲, Pinyin=sheng1) sound, voice, noise, tone, reputation


When the 2 characters are put together it means Echo.

noun: (Trad=回聲, Pinyin=hui2 sheng1) echo



echo (English Word)

plural form :echoes
=
a. Repetition of a sound by reflection of sound waves from a surface.
b. The sound produced in this manner.


Example using context clues: I can hear an echo of my voice after shouting on the mountains. It is fun because,after screaming my name, I hear the same sound being shout back to me.
