What you describe with Lewis Gaelic seems to be the case with Ulster Irish as well. A lot of speakers of other dialects (particularly Munster) dislike the sound of Ulster Irish, but because so many of the great singers (including "supergroups" such as Altan and Clannad) come from Ulster, it's what most people outside of Ireland hear and identify with.
